3D Printed Dancers

ITP Thesis

Through an interactive installation, users are exposed to a series of 3D printed sculptures of once-professional dancers and watch them come to life. As users engage with the pedestal, the sculpture disappears into the darkness and a holographic projection of the dancer begins to perform.

Dancers were filmed in a green room, which would later be edited to remove the background and overlay the video of the dancer with the same pattern used for the 3D print. This way only the silhouette of their movement is captured.

Each dancer had to hold the same pose for about 10minute, without moving, while she was being scanned, using a 3D sensor (Structure Sensor) and

3D Modelling in Zbrush

After scanning each model, their mesh was brought into ZBrush & tweaked, closing any holes & fixing any irregularities, creating a smooth, complete mesh. Once complete, the mesh was wrapped in patterned textured created in Rune.js.

Interaction

Users approach the pedestal & push a button. They watch as the dancer’s 3D sculpture disappears into darkness & is replaced by a holographic video performance of the same dancer. At the end of the dance the hologram disappears & the light turns on, re-illuminating the sculpture.
